Fog Frac/tured Pangea
Fog Frac/tured Pangea is a series of 24 monoprinted casebound books with poetry by Sharon Coleman, Indigo Moor and Liz McCall. 8 books feature Sharon’s poem Fog, 8 books feature Indigo’s poem Frac/tured and 8 feature Liz’s poem Pangea. The books are 24 pages and measure 16” x 13”.
This project explores a deeper complexity of design and conceptualization. Structurally, each book is made of four signatures with monotypes and lines of a poem. They are case bound and have a pocket on the inside of the back cover holding a broadside of the entire poem. The challenge was to fit the improvisational process of the monotypes into the restrictions of a longer book. In doing so, however, the process became more exploratory; more attention was given to how marks change and move and encounter each other.
The books are also designed to undo the usual hierarchy of text over image: some of the text is obscured by the monotype or melds with it becoming more abstract image than signifier. Poets were chosen whose work is very visual and tactile and thus resonates with the mark making. Each page spread enacts an improvisational dance between the reading of the text and experiencing the visuals.
